New Year's Resolutions

i've been doing a drawing a day since Jan 1st. Wish i could do more. it is a necessary balance for all the code and frantic deadlines i must meet. This week, I completed 5 very large websites (flash and jQuery) to launch on Tuesday with just 2 days of QA due to code lock/launch, at least a dozen programed video ads, encoded and processed another few dozen videos, some over a few GBs, now still pristine quality but only a couple MB to 400k, playback based on the user's bandwidth at the moment. A previous campaign had a few dozen misses that needed to be fixed in production because none came to my desk for programming! So, I have been under the gun, behind schedule for quite some time due to a lot of misses! Also, I am teaching a graduate course on Web Technologies with CSS3, HTML5, and JQuery... this is a lunchtime portrait of Chris i've been slowly working on, when i can escape and put some waxy color in my sketchbook. limited color: orange, hot and cool pinks, chartreuse, cerulean, red, and yellow. Drawing graphite too: 8b, 5b, 2b, hb. i'm also redoing my flash portfolio site in JQuery. stay tuned!

getting some sun

here i'm drifting through the atmosphere of color, technology, and tone with a narrative that's inspired by an ever-changing melody...

man does not live by helvetica alone

i've been developing a lot of multimedia assets and programming different types of items for templates in all types and sizes. I quickly came up with this little 486x320 video ad for a real Seventeen competition that was held a year or so ago, i worked on that then, too. This was for Amercian Rag, I forget where i pulled the model from. The rest is just a quick little bit in photoshop and some creative work with Helvetica. I only used Helvetica and I wrote all the copy myself. I programmed the JSP, wrote the video player, wrote the javascript, designed the ad, did the production work on the images, worked with the video, did the typography, layout, and the copywriting/editing. This is part of our Flexible Templating/CMS migration project... Click on the image to launch the video ad.

a taste of summer

after massive quantities of rain and snow.....

a taste of summer. a reprieve. then, back to the chill.

april is national poetry month.  i'll try to partake in some image and text... one of my old habits...  this one i didn't write, but edited for this illustration:

She lives in the place
In the side of our lives
Where nothing is
Ever put straight

She turns herself round
And she smiles and she says
'This is it'
'That's the end of the joke'

IF: Resolutions

one of my resolutions is to actively share the 1000s of drawings i do each year...  and draw more of the people i know.  here's candice after dim sum headed towards the random sounds of a banging drum corp in Marathon Plaza. it's important to watch your step in sf, you never know what or whom you might step on!

IF: deja vu

this was a quick sketch, 11x14.
deja vu is the experience of feeling sure that one has already witnessed or experienced a current situation, even though the exact circumstances of the previous encounter are uncertain and were perhaps imagined. The term was coined by a French psychic researcher, Émile Boirac (1851–1917) in his book L'Avenir des sciences psychiques ("The Future of Psychic Sciences"), which expanded upon an essay he wrote while an undergraduate. The experience of déjà vu is usually accompanied by a compelling sense of familiarity, and also a sense of "eeriness," "strangeness," "weirdness," or what Sigmund Freud calls "the uncanny." The "previous" experience is most frequently attributed to a dream, although in some cases there is a firm sense that the experience has genuinely happened in the past.[1]

digital v. traditional

this is an acyrlic comp i did and drew over with colored pencil that i liked, though it needed more contrast, and time was limited, so i scanned it in and added the rest with photoshop.  my deadline was a mere hour away and the computer saved me.  no paint to dry!  ;)

this was my FIRST  painting that i used a computer with... i then went on to draw beckett completely in photoshop... with interesting results.

devestating blast in bay area

here's a quick sketch i did as i watched live coverage of a profound local gas explosion.

after i saw local emails alerting me to the initial fireball in my inbox and of the trees and homes on fire, i checked the web and the tv in disbelief as the fire spread and grew to a frenzy.

this was part of my old commute...

(note: this is a digital capture from my old 3G iPhone, not a scan)

from the SF chronicle:

Freddy Tobar was upstairs in his kitchen getting ready to feed his Chihuahua Chiquita, when he heard popping sounds from under the ground and felt the house shaking.‘‘“

He looked outside and saw his backyard crumble into the earth. Trees disintegrated into flames.

His first thought was to run outside, but the door was already melting. He pushed through, burned his hands and with his dog in one arm, ran outside with his cell phone and called his wife, Nora Orozco-Tobar.‘

He screamed, "I'm burning! I'm burning."

He kept running through the streets and yelling for help, but no one stopped - others were fleeing, too - until his wife picked him up at Cherry Lane and drove him to Kaiser in South San Francisco.

ah, America.  i'm sick of your insane demands.

This here is a video I created a few years ago… when I didn’t have a video camera, but did have a g3 computer, so I used an Olympus digital camera and some Adobe software to put this together.  I animated it all with After Effects and Premiere.

Some of the homeless in this film have now abandoned their post; for better or worse.  One of the vacant spots in the background is now a thriving Walgreens. New residents have replaced the old. There’s a guy who sets up on an upside down milk crate with an old frying pan to contrast his buddy perched next to him on an upside down bucket, shaking a used cardboard cup at us passing by.  This is also where a poorly aged man in a wheelchair used to be.  His hands and feets were extremely swollen, exposed and blistering from the elements.  He sat slumped in his wheelchair next to the vacant storefront, not actively asking for assistance.  He was waiting out the days.

ah, America.  i'm sick of your insane demands.

The email address needs to be removed from this video, but i threw it up without editing it...   The goal here was to test out closed captioning with youTube, I think it works pretty well in this sample. It took minimal effort and time, though I did have a timed script to pair with the video.  Working on section 508 compliance.

IF: Paisley

topic is paisley.  subject is beck.  i used the paisley motif throughout the piece.

i've used the paisely here to visually interpret and unify the darkly-tinged moodiness of some of his music; for all its variety and its sponteneous sound that make for an ecclectic array of soul, funk, and folk.

beck is known to blur boundaries, so it is fitting that a portrait of him should as well.
